Common sense prevails: states trimming use of aircraft for speed traps

GasBuddy Blog -- Thirsty V8's that police agencies many time resort to are fuel thirsty. A typical Ford Crown Vic police edition nets a measly 16mpg combined. Now imagine state police and other agencies using something even more inefficient- aircraft- to net speeders. Well that may finally be coming to an end.

As the AP reports, agencies are somehow finally figuring out that maintaining, fueling, and piloting aircraft is just too darn expensive for the proceeds that come from writing tickets. And keep in mind, to pull a speeder over after seeing visual confirmation via aircraft, you still need a ground unit netting a combined 16mpg to finish stopping the vehicle. Not very efficient.

The California Highway Patrol still has 15 planes...

I would think the expenese don't add up to the fines involved. I would think such resources would be better utilized on catching criminals and those truly endangering the public.

replace it with cameras??? Let's just have a police state where they track you via chip in your car and issue you citations for whatever they decide. And then let's get a state police wearing brown shirts at first....

This does prove that despite all assurances from the government officials that speeding tickets are not issued because the state needs the money, but to help reduce fatalities, etc., now they are admitting that the state indeed looks at this from an income perspective.

Radar detectors and cameras can easily be attached to overpasses and etc. Never drive more than 10% over the speed limit or more than 10 mph over on a highway.

Before writing this off, we anticipate that as surveillance-hungry as our nation has become, it won't be long before they launch something that will just hover (like a satellite) to track ground traffic. Systems have become so sophisticated that they could link to ground-mounted cameras and automatically write tickets. Do not be fooled.

However, what impact does speeding and speed traps have on gas prices?

Using a plane and a idleing patrol car on the side of the road isn't going to make much money for any township or state.

How about speed cameras in work zones? But many people consider that an invasion of privacy, even though work zones are on public property. I guess some people believe it is their right to drive recklessly without any consequences.

I'm suprised they don't mandate GPS units in vehicles. They could fine you for each 0.1 MPH over the speed limit without any patrols.
