Ford faces more competition in police car market

Detroit Free Press -- Ford has long dominated the police car market, but will face more competition as it tries to hold onto that market share, even with the all-new Ford Police Interceptor that it is introducing today.
The Crown Victoria, introduced in the early 1980s, has long dominated police car sales and accounts for about 75% of the police car market with annual sales that exceed 45,000, Ford officials said in November.Ford confirmed last year that the new Interceptor will be based on the company’s Ford Taurus full-size sedan and will replace Ford’s Crown Victoria-based Police Interceptor in 2011.“The bottom line is they have a police car that defines the American police car,” said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics in Birmingham. “Police departments love it for a million rea

As a retired Deputy Sheriff, I favor the Crown Victoria. The Crown Vic was an exceptional vehicle. I lppk forward to Ford's new vehicle and hope it will be a good one. I drove the Chevy Caprice for awhile and it was not as nice as the Crown Vic. Other vehicles I drove as a Deputy were the Jeep Cherokee and the Ford Explorer. The Explorer was nice in roles requiring 4 wheel drive. I had a few opportunities to drive the Dodge Charger, but it left a lot to be desired.

Taurus is smaller than crown vic and that is a problem. Room is important in a police car.

It would be hard to replace the Crown Vic as the leading police car, but as Frod retires that nameplate, this is an opportunity for GM and Chrysler.

Payless - the Charger may get better mileage in a regular configuration, but how does it do in a police configuration? Once you start hardening everything, amping up everything etc, fuel economy goes down. Does the Charger have enough room to actually be hardened fully for police work or are they using stock vehicles?

I had a neighbor who was a police officer and had an old cruiser for his car - don't even go into the fuel economy or the price of replacement parts for those things. The alternator alone was roughly 4 times the price of a stock alternator, and you HAD to replace it with the heavy duty one.

We all knew it was going to come down to this. Ford is competing with Government Motors for police cars. I wonder how this is going to play out. It couldn't be held in a better place. At least in Vegas the odd makers can get in n the act. Anyone want to place a bet?

The Crown Victoria is the last remaining regular "full sized" car from the days of my youth. In those days, it was called the Galaxy and competed only with Chevy Impala and Plymouth Fury. The Japanese made small cars, the Germans made Beatles, and everyone else made either expensive stuff or junk.

Competition forces advances if one is to get ahead. The Crown Vics I've seen the MPs use in Ottawa Canada are smaller than their predecessors.

dopster, they may have received a better deal but not in price. Ford is discontinuing the Crown VIC. The Dodge Chargers get better fuel economy. Some Police here are going with the Charger because the Crown VIC stopping production, the better fuel economy is a plus. The Chargers cost a grand or so more than the Crown VIC did.

They can handle it but need to reconsider using the Crown Vic instead of the Taurus for their police interceptor.

The Toledo Police Dept. has been using a fleet of Dodge Cahargers for about a year now. The old fleet was Ford Crown Vic's. Think they maybe got a better deal.
