How does the fact Canada, and Europe, and Japan, all tax fuel higher than the US make a difference - the fact is, Americans enjoy lower gas prices than just about any country in the world, other than large exporters like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela with oppressive governments, that essentially give away gas to citizens to mollify the natives while they're being stomped on in otherways? Yet Americans beef constantly about fuel prices better than all but a few in the world enjoy.
The US likely should probably tax fuel much higher as well - as the world's largest crude importer for decades, it has sent a vast amount of American wealth to foreign oil producers, impoverishing its own economy while enriching others. The reason most crude-importing nations tax fuel highly is the taxes work - people choose vehicles and transportion and lifestyles that consume less, allowing their nation to retain more of its wealth.
