Explosions are one of the overlooked bits. There are two ways to do a well, water or oil/gas. Other than shallow digging/auger then you are going to be fracturing your way through rock lays. In my water well a few years ago, that was vertical fracturing via a pile driver mechanism for about 300 ft or so below ground water into the aquifer zone. However, when you going literally miles down you are using a diamond or similar drill vertically, and possibly horizontally as well. That's good for the bores as such, but the horizontals still need fracturing to create fine capillaries to allow feed into the bores. I really don't know, but that rock in the horizontals has to be fractured somehow. Some sort of high-power explosive would seem to be needed. I can see where the waves would bother animals. A friend in Eastern Ontario noticed that all three of his dogs suddenly defecated all at once, explosively (and were extremely upset) 30 seconds or so before a 5.0 earthquake hit a week or so ago.
