Ford faces more competition in police car market

Detroit Free Press -- Ford has long dominated the police car market, but will face more competition as it tries to hold onto that market share, even with the all-new Ford Police Interceptor that it is introducing today.
The Crown Victoria, introduced in the early 1980s, has long dominated police car sales and accounts for about 75% of the police car market with annual sales that exceed 45,000, Ford officials said in November.Ford confirmed last year that the new Interceptor will be based on the company’s Ford Taurus full-size sedan and will replace Ford’s Crown Victoria-based Police Interceptor in 2011.“The bottom line is they have a police car that defines the American police car,” said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics in Birmingham. “Police departments love it for a million rea

I've never noticed what kinds of cars the police have here. However, in all the mysteries that I read, they are always joking about the police driving around in the very conspicuous Crown Vics.

This should be interesting how Ford deals with the competition.

Competition is good for business. It will give police departments a choice of at least three vehicles to choose from.

CV is a sturdy and safe vehicle. The CHP sale their retired vehicles, its a great option for teen driver's first vehicle.

The sad thing is that I see Toyota Camry's as police cars. Maybe the police department wants something that can accelerate easily?

Another car that made a even greater cruiser was the cousin of the
Crown Victoria, the Mercury Marauder with 302 horses under the hood
out performed and handled much better than the C.V.

I think that FORD just pulled a "Major Boner" The Crown Victoria Intercepter was as good as it comes . It had about 99.9% of the bugs
worked out of it. Most important; it was a "Rear Wheel Drive" and had a Full Frame. and it could cruise all day at 100M.P.H. [safely]

Cops like rear wheel drive.
The Taurus is front wheel drive or ALL WHEEL DRIVE!
With training, I think the cops will LOVE that AWD option!

A local city just bought Chryslers over the Crown Vic and saved a few bucks on the car. After installing all the "police options" not included they spent close to $2000 more per unit than the Fords. OOPS!

Police cars need to be large enough to hold computers, guns, radar, radios, safety items, perps, etc. The Crown Vic was a good car for this. They won't be able to carry as much of this stuff when they downsize to the Taurus. May have to load each car with certain equipment for specific uses.

Until I read this, I never paid attention to what was being used here. I think it is GM, but I really don't know and I know that I really care.

Once GM stopped making full sized Impalas and Caprices, Ford got the benefit of the only truly full sized sedan to be used for police cruisers. The new Taurus is not as big as a Crown Vic, but with the SHO package will be more than enough to be used.

Crown Vics and G. Marquis are totally defined as police interceptors and most had 250,000 - 350,000 miles before they were traded by police dept fleets. The 4.6 & 5 L engines were long lasting and very durable. Most in large cities were never turned off except for gasing and maint.

I'm sure the new Taurus interceptor will be based on the Fod SHO engine. Ford has cornered the market an the others will have a hard time breaking in although GM will probably do pertty good because it is subsidezed by we the taxpayer.

I question the need of a full -size car as a police vehicle, particularly if the entire fleet of police cars are the same vehicle. It might be better thinking for departments to think of the various duties where vehicles are involved and buy accordingly. For example, there is no reason to use a fuel burner where the car is used as a mobile warning sign - something I see frequently. In fact, I wonder about spending a policeman's time to sit parked, with engine running, while a work crew is working in the same place for days on end.

Carbon Motors has designed a new police cruiser and I believe it will
be cost prohibitive to produce therefore, many police agency budgets
will not be able to procure them.

The best part of this story is that the Ford Motor Company is ahead of the curve in evaluation of its already successful Crown Victoria model and work on improving the selection for consumers with the Interceptor. In recent years the CEO of Ford has made some unfortunate choices with the company's advertising dollars and "social-political" stands. Make a good product, support it with excellent dealerships and service, and you will remain a strong symbol of American know-how at work.

The police force in my city uses Chrysler products.

Any car that isn't real wheel drive the police try to avoid.

That should be a message for the rest of us.
