Infrastructure Problems In U.S. Go Far Beyond Dollars

Huffington Post -- NEW YORK -- When travelers from abroad come to this city, the financial and cultural capital of the world's richest nation, two dilapidated and depressing airports greet them. The clogged runways, the leaking roofs, the maddening taxi lines, the lost travelers bumping into each other -- all these depredations are just part of flying the friendly skies to JFK or LaGuardia.

Jetsetters' laments about subpar airports, now almost a cliche, may not have been foremost on President Obama's mind when he gave his State of the Union address on January 24. But they may actually be more representative of the country's nagging infrastructure problems than the images invoked by the "crumbling roads and bridges" he referenced in that speech.

The problems America faces with its infrastructure are often m

LaGuardia is owned and operated by the port authority of New York & New Jersey. Shouldn't they be the ones paying for it! More Huff from the Puffington post!

Obama should worry about the country instead of trying to get re-elected. Can't wait till he is voted out.

Interesting to hear the progressive-leftist Huff lament the decay of transportation infrastructure. Where have they been all these years while their progressive buddies (both parties) in congress, state legislatures and cities across the country have spent infrastructure money on other things.

They've been cheering from the sidelines--that's where they've been. Progressive don't care where the money comes from or what it is suppose to be used for, they will spend as much as they can on whatever THEY feel it should be spent on.

The largest budget item in many states now is K-12 education. Schools are nice, but if there are no roads, water or sewer system, who can use the buildings; if there are no police or firefighters, who is going to provide safety?

Infrastructure funds have been robbed for years to support top-heavy government programs that have absolutely NOTHING to do with infrastructure.

You're concern is vacuous, Huff.

the money that has been invested in airport development has largely been a waste of tax payers money. Large infrastructures have been in place to shove down the throats un needed / wanted expansion....

Unfortunate but now the American way. Squeeze every nickel out of something before improving it. Things are subpar because the leadership of this country is subpar. You cant sit behind a computer and make things better. You have to get your hands dirty once in a while. These politicians refuse to mess up their maincures. And down the crapper things go...and they answer in DC is just to tax more. No clue at all.

I wasn't aware that international flights landed at LaGuardia. The Huff Post was never one to let facts get in the way though.

The mild winter this year is going to make it difficult for city, county, and state officials to blame the harsh weather for the crumbling roads and pot holes in Wisconsin in general, and Milwaukee in particular.

Just remember this, the cause of unemployment lies at the feet of ATM's according to Obama! LOL.

"One of the challenges in terms of rebuilding our economy is – businesses have gotten so efficient, that, uh, when was the last time somebody went to a bank teller? Instead of using an ATM. Or, used a travel agent instead of going online. A lot of jobs out that that used to require people now have become automated." Barack Hussein Obama.

The problems aren't limited to crumbling roads and bridges, but also inadequate and outdated infrastructure.

Seems more like a lack of investment in needed US infrastructure, due to a misguided adherence to a "no tax whatsoever" policy. You reap what you sow, and in this case, don't reap (economic expansion) what you don't sow (infrastructure investment).
There's a reason China is beating our pants off, economically, and it's not because they have low taxes. It's because they understand the importance of building their infrastructure to remain competitive in a global market. We like to give tax cuts to billionaires so they can buy more yachts, run for GOP Presidency, etc, and continue to fall behind.

LOTS of problems for our great country! It's hard to prioritize what needs to be fixed the first. I have flown into LGA in the past year and it certainly is not a gem of an airport!
