Oil-patch ironies aside, many questions for Harper

The Globe and Mail -- hose who have discussed the issue with him report that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been worried a state-owned company, likely from China, would take a run at a major Canadian energy producer.

Now that the massive China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC Ltd.) has bid $15.1-billion for Nexen Inc., it’s easy to understand the Prime Minister’s uneasiness. His initial statements were properly guarded, as befits the complexity of the file and his own apparent hesitations.
It has been said that the CNOOC bid is a standard business transaction: one company taking over another, in this case with the support of the Nexen board. CNOOC trades on stock exchanges. It has made commitments about keeping headquarters in Calgary, maintaining staff and conducting business pretty much as before.

Who cares about wait lines when you can't afford health insurance at all, @BigHorne1?

I'd rather wait in line in Canada than be thrown out into the snow in the U.S.

Riiight, @bullfrog69. Because Obama has been President for the last 12 years and has single-handedly turned over the country to China.

I think the previous guy in the Oval Office had a large part to play. And Big Business saw 1.2 billion customers in China and thought they could screw China harder than China would screw us.

So, how'd that turn out?

Harper will have to consider the possible impact on Canadian-US relations. However, he cannot overlook the increased exposure to Chinese markets.

The government needs to stand their ground. Have a talk with Canada and re-assure the friendship we have with them. It is mostly one sided, their people come down to the U.S. for cheaper clothing and better healthcare. Just for all nay-sayers, that speak of how good Canada healthcare is, why is it so many come to the United STates for alot of their surgeries...wait lines. Get ready for the same here. It isn't government run, but government controlled with their regulations...oh yeah that is one in the same.

Hard to guess what really will happen. Here's one possibility:

CNOOC gets state-owned money (from China) enabling it to grow and produce at below-market rates. That enables it to under-cut competitors (see the PV module industry for a very recent example).

CNOOC's acquisition of Nexen would expand their ability to produce crude at a lower cost than than an open-market competitor. The net effect will be downward pressure on price.

Open-market multinationals will kick and scream because this kind of scenario generally erodes their profit margins. They will exhort their governments to kick and scream with them.

But the millions of small individual consumers shout 'hurray' as prices decline.

So, in a twist of irony, you can wince at China buying up a North American company (again), but it just might help your wallet.

What's your beef with the President, @humblepie? And why is sending our money to Canada such a good thing? You can now see they're more than happy to get in bed with China.

Drive more efficient vehicles and we won't need ANY foreign oil, Canada included.

According to the CBC, Nexen is 10% owned by US interests and can present a wrinkle to the take over bid. Only 28% of their assets are in Canada and the balance is overseas. Someone didn't do their homework.

Don't think Harper has a choice but to allow this deal to go through since he dedicated a trip to China to woo them. If opposed to the deal, the only out for Canada is to convince the US stakeholders to decline the deal.

As a shareholder, I'd be pissed if the deal gets blocked. Business is business but I love politics!
