UAW's push to organize Nissan plant in Miss. faces daunting odds

Tennessean -- As Americans observe Labor Day, the working person’s holiday, a once-strong labor union faces a watershed moment in its efforts to rebuild membership by organizing autoworkers in an increasingly anti-union South.

The UAW has ramped up efforts to gain a foothold amid the booming foreign-transplant auto industry below the Mason-Dixon Line, most recently by targeting a sprawling Nissan plant in Canton, Miss., where workers’ average wages are $1.50 an hour less than those at a comparable Nissan factory near Nashville.

But winning a union vote will be a daunting task.

Foreign auto plants have been providing jobs and expanding during a down economy, while their U.S. auto-industry counterparts were closing plants and laying off workers.

CanagaRetna said “Nissan workers average $60,000 a year

Perhaps that's why some areas are still dirt poor?

It's clear they don't want the union. So why try? Oh, yeah, because the unions always know better what's good for the worker than the worker does....

All you have to understand is how everyone got screwed in the Government Motors bailout except the unions. Obama did it. Unions like outside toilets are a thing of the past.

My next vehicle will be from a NON-union plant, and WON'T be from one of the big three.

Workers have figured out that the Unions' purpose is not to protect workers, but to make money.

We can't blame what happened to the big three only on the unions.
For years they never bothered with R&D, just the minimum, just freshen it up a bit and sell it as the new model year, while the Japonese continued advancing. Ford for example was in way over its head when they bought into so many other buisnesess. Once they sold off and concentrated on their main purpose, car and truck production, they turned around. You would not believe how many salaried workers were let go (supervisors).
Production line workers are not just standing around, the company lays off workers until the line barely runs, they do not keep excess, workers on. If you think it's easy work, you should go on a tour of a local plant and imagine yourself doing the same thing over and over again 600-700 times per shift.

All we have to do is look at countries that do not allow unions.
Look at the injury and death rate, even though most are not reported there, you will still see a staggering difference. If you got hurt or killed on the job, would you not want your family to receive some kind of assistance . Or would you simply be happy knowing that company profits are at an all time high, and the execs. still make their millions. Nothing against them making their money, but they should share some with the men amd women that put them there.
Both in the USA and Canada, the only time companys started caring about worker safety was when the unions got involved, and this set a precedent that other non-union companys had to follow to this day. Even causing the govern. to bring in worker protection.

I agree unions do need a change to keep up with economic times, and they have done that. Last contract they agreed to cuts and wage freezes, while most other unionized companies took raises.
Going back to what julesTN said about Walmart, he is right, they did abandon any community that would unionize the store. Why, so they can do what ever they want to the employee! If they see a group of workers talking they discourage it. What have they done in the communities they enter, drive all others out of business, then gradually raise prices. How many products can you find in a Walmart made in USA, or Canada. Maybe 4-5% the rest is all made in China and other countries that don't have or recognize workers rights and safety needs. If you get hurt, just move over because they'll put someone else in your place.

Unions have gone way beyond their original cause. Thsy need to be drastically changed. They cost employes & citizenry too much money with what theve gotten . They need t give back a lot or be destroyed.

I still wonder how many people would be so "righteous" as to turn down a union job if one were offered to them and their family.

Yep! The GOP hates the middle class (how dare they expect a living wage!) and the faster the GOP can get rid of them, the faster they can give our social security and medicare trust funds over to the wall street shysters.

Nissan does NOT want unions - they just MIGHT leave the country if they entered into the workplace - look at WalMart - when they tried to enter some Canadian cities and the union was a certainty, WalMart just pulled the plug - a big finger to the unions!

If you’re rich, you hate them. If you’re the worker, unions give you a fighting chance. $60,000 is reasonable. Not everyone can walk in a suit making millions annually.

China does need the UAW or some organization like it.
Do some research on working conditions there, would you put up with it.
When all the construction was going on for the Beijing olympics a few years back, do you know how many people lost their lives. During construction of the "bird nest" as it was called olympic stadium, did you know workers were not allowed wash room breaks, they actually wore diapers on the job so as not to slow down construction. That alone makes the union dues I pay well worth it.
