We’re pump chumps!

New York Post --
Gas prices soared to as high as $4.79 a gallon for regular in the city in the wake of Hurricane Isaac — triggering outrage from drivers.

“It’s price-gouging,” said Samuel Flatt, 39, as he paid $42.25 to fill up his 2008 Prius at a Gulf station in Briarwood, Queens. “I was just in Suffolk County. I passed a sign that says $3.89 for regular, and here it’s $4.13.”

“That’s a very big difference for no reason. It was under $4 last week,” he said.

The citywide average is $4.06 a gallon, according to the Web site NewYorkGasPrices.com, compared with $3.87 a month ago — and a current national average of $3.80. The highest local price was $4.79 a gallon at two Citgo stations in The Bronx.Drivers described themselves as outraged — but helpless.

Common sense would have told me to have filled up at 3.79 and save 0.90 a gallon. Seems like this Samuel Flatt, suffers from a severe lack of intelligence, over victimization of price gouging.

If New York is complaining about rising gasoline prices, they have to look no further then our president. His energy policy, as stated by his secretary of energy, is to raise prices to convince consumer to start using his "green" energy.

At least a quarter of Gulf oil platforms shut down during the storm, and since much of Louisiana was without power, that likely means refinery and pipeline shutdowns as well. That, in turn, is a supply disruption, and a supply disruption means higher prices if demand doesn't fall to match. The only chump about it is if you don't do what you can to cut demand - drive less, and choose a more fuel-efficient vehicle when you buy. It's the only part of the equation we can begin to influence.
